Today I would like to take the opportunity to offer a vote of congratulations to a number of members of the St Joseph’s College community. These students and teachers are all very deserving of being congratulated on their efforts as they set a wonderful example of what we are endeavoring to achieve at St Joseph’s College.

• Congratulations to Therese Cronin, Petrina Edser, Kerrie-Anne Fellenberg, Maree Harman, Deborah Mischlewski, Cate Park-Ballay, Emily Whiting and Amanda Wighton. All of these wonderful people were nominated across the various sections of the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Excellence Awards and for a Spirit of Catholic Education Award. We are so very grateful for the outstanding contributions these people make to our community.
• On Wednesday at our assembly we congratulated our Academic Excellence Award recipients for Semester One 2020, the Year 12 students who received their Certificate 3 in Business and a group of junior students who were acknowledged as finalists in the Storyathon awards. These students are to be commended for their outstanding commitment and dedication to their learning.
• Congratulations to Jennifer Stead, Annette Warby, Andrew Fellenberg, Deb Ditchmen, Madeleine Minns, John Hodges and Fr Ray Crowley who today were presented with Diocese of Toowoomba Catholic Schools Long Service Awards in recognition and appreciation of their service of 20, 25, 30 or 35 years. We thank you for your commitment and dedication to Catholic Education.

Catholic Education Week

I would like to acknowledge the students who have been endeavouring to achieve their personal excellence and growth in all areas of their schooling. On Wednesday, we recognised students with Gold, Silver or Bronze Academic Awards. These awards acknowledge students who have achieved academic excellence from Semester 1 Reports. The key message for EVERY student is to consider the challenge to make progress, to improve, to learn, to grow and to develop.

Below is a diagram that explains the relationship between achievement and progress. It shows clearly where we would like students to aspire to.

Year 12 Religion and Ethics

During class this week, students were asked to begin a ‘Bucket List’ of what they wanted to achieve in their life.

I expected to see travel, skydiving, going to University, however, I was unprepared for the depth of responses which showed these young men and women to be people of compassion who wanted to make a positive difference in our world. I have included some of these below:

• I want to be able to forgive people for their past mistakes that have affected me.
• Learn and educate others about the Indigenous culture.
• To help build schools for disable children in Africa.
• To volunteer at an animal reserve or shelter.
• Work at an orangutan rehabilitation centre and be a part of the rehabilitation project for rescued orphaned baby orangutans.
• Stargaze with someone close to me.
• To be comfortable and confident in my own body and with my personality.
• To be able to help people in need who believe their rights are being oppressed.
• Gain self-love and appreciation.
• Spend more time with my grandparents.

They also valued the simple things in life:

• Create memories with friends and family.
• Go to as many festivals and concerts as I can.
• I want to have tea and scones at Buckingham Palace.
• Have a flower garden.
• Keep the important people in my life.
• Buy a Dyson Vacuum.

This was a beautiful activity that truly showed me that our students not only can join in prayer but are willing be the prayer out in the world.

Bishop’s Inservice Day

This Friday, Toowoomba Catholic Schools employees around the diocese will gather at their school locations to celebrate and grow at Bishop’s Inservice Day.

The St Joseph’s staff will be spending the day reflecting on what it means to be a community and the unique ways we can all contribute to the diversity of our school family. This will involve exploring the Enneagram.

The Enneagram is a system of personality typing that describes patterns in how people interpret the world and manage their emotions. The Enneagram describes nine different personality types and maps each of these types on a nine-pointed diagram which helps to illustrate how the types relate to one another.  This same concept is studied in 12 Religion and Ethics as way to explore our personal spiritualities.

We hope that this experience will be an enriching way to come to more understanding of each other and strengthen our working relationships.

Reflection – A Prayer for Channelling God’s Peace

The miracle story of the Loaves and the Fishes, where Jesus uses a very small amount of bread and seafood to feed the starving masses holds a significant message for us. One interpretation of this story is that the bread and fish and an allegorical representation of love, the point of the story being that love is not finite, it never runs out. Loving one person does not need to come at the expense of another. I choose to believe that the same is true of gratitude.

One of the great joys of my short time at Joey’s has been overseeing a number of Excellence in Teaching and Leading Award nominations for a number of our staff. You may have seen these people on the college Facebook page. Our staff, students and parents are incredibly privileged to have these people in our community doing the great work that they do.

I also know that there are a large number of other teachers at St Joseph’s College who do great work who have not yet been nominated. I sincerely hope that in coming years we will be able to recognise these people as well. In the meantime, I would like to encourage everyone in our college community to take the time to express gratitude to someone in the community who has had a positive impact on us, no matter how small or large the impact has been. Taking the time to genuinely thank someone costs us very, very little, but the impact it can have on another person is profound.

Congratulations to Mrs Maree Harman who has been nominated for a Toowoomba Catholic Schools Excellence in Teaching Awards in the Emerging Leader Category.

Colleagues of Mrs Harman have noticed her:

Canvas organisation, management and support of staff, students and parents, through independent and flexible learning opportunities.

Ability to enhance the role of the teacher as they become evaluators of their teaching. This is demonstrated by the implementation and modelling of Visible Learning, supporting staff; cultures of thinking; thinking routines and student progress.

Ability and expert knowledge in promoting the spiritual moral, social and cultural development in individual and groups.

What a year we have had to navigate. This has generated new challenges which brought about innovative teaching practices and learning experiences for our students in the Home Economics department. I would like to thank the Home Economics staff in the way they rose to the situation and faced challenges in the movement to online learning. The staff ensured students were still able to gain a fulfilling education in food and textiles.

Video demonstrations were a prominent tool used in the online learning experience which has since been implemented into the classroom after seeing an improvement in student performance. Home Economics classes provided students with the opportunity to step away from the computer and reignite the importance of vital skills in cooking and textiles for individuals, families, and the community. Year 7 and 8 students expressed creativity with unique designs to personalise their reusable bags.

Year 9 students focussed on designing a nutritious convenient dinner to meet their family’s needs. Year 10 students designed and produced face masks for themselves to address safety concerns facing the globe. Although this home-based experience was challenging I hope this has allowed families to witness their child’s skills and talents which we as teachers have the joy to observe within the classroom.

It has been delightful having students back in the textiles rooms and kitchens recently and seeing the creations evolve. Senior Fashion students have recently finalised their fashion items as part of their project to reflect an inspirational person. The senior Kitchen Operations students have been focusing on presenting and serving a two-course meal for six independently.

The Home Economics department encourages students at home to use their knowledge gained in the classroom and apply it through practice as it builds confidence and experience.

It seems like only yesterday that our newest members of the St Jopseh’s Community started here. Between school camp, induction programs, and not to mention the complete disruption to ‘normal’, the Year 7 cohort have been thrown some curveballs. However, I am pleased to say just how well the Year 7 students, and their families, have really adapted to the new changes.

It was really encouraging to see the Year 7 students really stepping out of their comfort zones and finding the advantages of schooling online. Students noted that they felt comfortable completing work at their own pace, asking Mum and Dad for help, asking their teachers and peers for help, and really enjoyed the independence and freedom of online schooling.

This time has taught me many things about what it means to be a teacher: more specifically, how important relationships are for students and their teachers.

Strong student teacher relationships serve two purposes:

• Shape the way children think and act in school
• Improve how well they do at school

(Hattie, 2020).

When teachers and students have a warm and caring relationships, the students show greater levels of school adjustment (even years later) and achieve higher marks. (Hattie, 2020)

How can this be done? Through genuine care, and high expectations.

Throughout the pandemic it was clear to me that the amount of hard work that my colleagues put in shows that their care for their students. The hours of planning, countless check ins with students and online meeting, after online meeting, after online meetings highlighted just how passionate the staff are at St Josephs. Students commented that they never felt truly alone- they knew that they always had someone they could talk to. There was no ‘drop’ in expectation from our teachers, there was a real sense that our students could achieve anything regardless of whether they were at home or at school. The standard of lessons never faltered. This was evident in the mock NAPLAN results and student report cards, where many students saw great growth in their learning over Semester One; not an easy thing to do during the midst of a pandemic.

The Junior Basketball Association (JBA) is evidence of how genuine care and high expectations can have exponential success in school adjustment and a sense of community. Students in Year 12 take time out of their study to coach some of the younger students at lunch. These sessions focus on team building activities, core skills and mini games. This has seen an improvement in not only the skills displayed on the field; but is a great example of how students live out the college values of endeavour and respect. The older students have been mentoring the younger players, teaching them how to support each other on and off the field, always try their best, and what it means to be a member of the St Joseph Community. I am proud of the effort the Seniors have put into this project and can’t wait to see where it leads us. If you are interested in joining, bring your basketball or running shoes down to the McKillop Centre at Lunch every Friday.

If we continue to believe that the outstanding students at St Joseph’s College can rise to any challenge; live out the College values daily and persevere when times get tough, then I truly believe they will. I feel very privileged to be part of the journey that the Year 7s are on, and I can’t wait to see what 2021 has in store for us all at the College.

New enrolments are being taken for Term 3. Music Tutors at St Joseph’s College are experts in their field, professional and experienced performers and exceptional tutors. Students can choose just about any instrument to learn and several are available for hire.

Piano, guitar, bass guitar, flute, clarinet saxophone, violin, viola, cello, double bass, drums, percussion and singing. (Piano, drums and guitars are not available for hire).

As per our article in Week 1, the Library is undergoing some changes at present. Last week we saw the previous carpet removed and the new one installed:

Additionally, in Term 2, students were provided with the opportunity to have a voice in the Library design by completing a survey during PC, accessed on the Library Student Hub on Canvas. When provided the opportunity to give ideas about how they would change the Library if given the chance, the following suggestions were offered:

• Designated areas within the space.
• Spaces and additional comfortable furniture to relax.
• Greater range of break activities- like STEM, craft and board games.

Acting on this feedback, the Library staff have begun reconfiguring the space to make the library easy to navigate and to provide designated zones, including:

• A silent reading zone with comfortable soft furnishings.
• A learning zone, set to be completed in the future with modern, flexible furnishings.
• A research zone adjacent to our non-fiction shelves.
• A collaboration zone for group work and break social activities, like chess and uno games.

Of the students who responded to our survey, 95% stated that they found the library easy to navigate. However, many students gave some great suggestions about how to improve this further with the top suggestions being:

• Sorting the Fiction Collection into genres,
• Adding genre spine labels to novels, and
• Adding more signage and maps on where to find specific texts.

We are pleased to report that these suggestions are all being embedded. As you can see in the images of the reconfiguration below, we are currently taking the time to sort our Fiction Collection into genres, accompanied by new and bright spine labels and signage.

The process of sorting into genres is certainly a mammoth undertaking!

Some State Titles are still going ahead this year. If any students wish to trial in cricket for 12 years boys and girls, please contact me and I will provide the appropriate paperwork. All information regarding trials for the remainder of 2020 can be found on the Darling Downs website.

Athletics Carnival.

Out annual athletics carnival is going ahead on August 5. It will be held in a modified format because of COVID restrictions and the fact that many students have had very little athletics training or are lacking in some overall fitness because of COVID restrictions.

The carnival will have a ‘fun’ theme this year, but emphasis is still being placed on having an overall House Champion as well as individual age champions. We encourage participation from all students as well as recognising our talented students in the athletics arena. It is a normal school day and as such all students should be in attendance.

Students are encouraged to come dressed in their sports wear but putting on plenty of house colours to make the oval glow with colour. House leaders will organise themes with the students.

The event is being held here at the College so the School canteen will be in operation and students will not need to find transport to other venues. We ask that parents respect our COVID plan and stay outside of the school oval if they wish to watch the events please.

Lost Uniforms

Students are leaving uniforms items all around the College at the moment and many of these items cannot be returned to students because they do not have the student’s names on them or are so blurred that reading them is impossible.

Parents/Guardians please check your students clothing and ensure they are clearly labelled so these valuable items can be returned to your children and save you the expense of having to buy new ones.

St Joseph’s College Year 9 student, Jack Mullins, has successfully auditioned for Empire Theatre’s Senior IMPACT Ensemble, at just 14 years of age.

Now in its tenth year, the IMPACT Ensemble continues to challenge assumptions and places youth voice in the spotlight.

Despite Empire Theatre’s Senior IMPACT Ensemble including young adults, Jack says he feels right in his element.

“Auditioning for Senior IMPACT was a big choice, but it was the right one for me. I believe I got the most I could have got out of Junior IMPACT and I am finding Senior is providing a much more professional and personal environment,” said Mr Mullins.

Original works by the Senior IMPACT ensemble have previously gone on to tour in metropolitan areas, been published and have been staged across the country by other young artists seeking to make their voices heard.

St Joseph’s College Middle Leader for the Arts, Cathie Barton, says she is impressed with Jack’s talent and believes he has the potential to go far.

“Jack is a very mature and talented young actor, one of the best I’ve seen at such an early age. I am exceptionally proud of his achievements, especially with getting into Senior IMPACT. I was able to help with his rehearsal of the monologues before his audition, and even watching him then, I knew he would get in because he is such a talented young man,” said Ms Barton.

Jack says he is grateful for the drama program at St Joseph’s College, with staff providing invaluable support to help him achieve his dreams.

“The St Joseph’s College drama teachers have been fantastic, and they have taken the time to support me with my audition for Senior. They gave me notes and critique and I don’t think I would have got in without their support,” said Mr Mullins.

The Ski Trip will once again be running from Saturday 3^rd July to Saturday 10^th July 2021.  The trip will be open to students in Years 10-12 – subject to satisfactory school behaviour.  We will travel by bus overnight to NSW, and ski or snowboard for a week, while staying in accommodation in Jindabyne.  The cost of the trip is yet to be finalised, but will be between $1300-$1500, depending on the number of students.

CANCELLED

The Music and Drama Student Performance Concert which was scheduled for Friday 21^st August is unfortunately cancelled for 2020.

Due to restricted rehearsal time and restricted audience capacity, it was agreed that the Showcase could not proceed.

Music Ensembles have recommenced rehearsals and we are optimistic about performing at a suitable occasion in Term 4.

We have been working hard to revive and reinvigorate the College’s social media, in particular through our Facebook and Instagram pages.

QTAC Update

QTAC applications open on 4 August. I have spoken to all year 12 students about QTAC, the application process, preferencing and how to respond to an offer.

As of week 3 I will begin one-on-one and small group follow up interviews with Year 12 students. For many, the conversations will continue as ideas, aspirations and pathway considerations continue to evolve.

The QTAC website provides nearly all of the information a parent or applicant requires. As always, I look forward to meeting with parents to go over any topic you require more information about.

Early Offer Guarantee

A large number of our universities are offering the Early Offer Guarantee program for our current Year 12 students.

Early Offer Program means a student could receive an offer to study at their preferred university, as early as August, before ATAR’s and final results are released.

Offers are made based on our school Principal’s recommendation and is independent of Year 12 results. Any subject prerequisites, written statements, interviews or portfolios specific to a program will still have to be met.

Griffith University Update

The Griffith University Early Start to Tertiary Studies (GUESTS) program provides ATAR eligible students the opportunity to study one or two courses (subjects) at Griffith while completing their high school studies. This program allows students to build skills and confidence and stretch their academic boundaries. Students are eligible to apply for credit transfer once they commence their degree studies. GUESTS students are also eligible for two (2) adjustment factors for each successfully completed course.

Second hand uniforms are also available at the Uniform Shop.

If you have used uniform items that would like to donate, please drop off to the Uniform Shop during opening hours.  Donations are greatly appreciated.

If you have used uniform items that you would like us to sell for you, please call into the uniform shop and collect a “Used Clothing” form. Used uniforms items MUST be in good condition, hems intact, no holes, stains or missing buttons. They also need to washed, ironed and be the current uniform.

Did you know Australia needs more than 30,000 blood donations every week – that’s 1 donation every 5 minutes.

For Toowoomba, this means we need to collect 300 plasma donations and 240 blood donations – every week!

And it’s volunteer donors from our local communities and Lifeblood Teams, like St. Joseph’s College who keep the nation’s heart beating.

We need your support this week and next to ensure our centre collects the life-giving donations patients need.  Appointments are available this week and next, especially on…

• Monday:  7.00am – 7.00pm
• Tuesday:  11.00am – 7.00pm
• Thursday:  7.00am – 7.00pm
• Friday:  7.00am – 2.30pm

If any members of your school community aged 18 – 70 are feeling healthy and well, and can give

1 hour of your time this week, then please book your donation now by calling 13 14 95 or visit lifeblood.com.au
