Dear Parents and Caregivers,

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT
A new report from the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) reinforces the strong correlation between school attendance and student achievement.
The release of the Attendance Matters Spotlight report also shows how crucial it is to ensure students feel welcome, safe and supported at school, and encouraged to attend. The report shows that the overall school attendance picture in Australia is good, with students in Years 1-10 attending, on average, 92 per cent of available school days in Australia – a rate comparable to other countries with high performing education systems.
But there remain areas of concern, including that 25 per cent of Australian school students attend less than 90 per cent of school days. This means that by Year 10, one quarter of students will have missed 10 per cent of school, or one whole year. I am betting that they will be behind their peers on academic measures. I encourage parents to support their children and the teachers by ensuring students attend all classes unless unwell.

DEEP LEARNING THROUGH HARD WORK

In Daniel Coyle’s work The Talent Code, he demonstrates that nearly all high achievers have spent countless more hours than their peers involved in deep practice – i.e. mindful, purposeful practice, with masterful coaching. Our destiny is laid down in the way we spend our days. People do not decide their futures; they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures. We can’t buy our accomplishments; we earn them. Our students at St Joseph’s need to ensure they are taking all the opportunities available to them to ensure they are deep learning. Each day.

At the age of 81, Pablo Casals, the world’s foremost cellist, agreed to have Robert Snyder make a movie short, ‘A Day in the Life of Pablo Casals’. Snyder asked Casals why he continued to practice four and five hours a day. Casals answered: “Because I think I am making progress.”
I often felt that the most rewarding thing about working hard to acquire a skill was not the enjoyment of the skill itself but the satisfaction that came from knowing I had worked hard and done my best. Hard work becomes its own reward.

Grandparents Mass and Celebrations

Over 170 grandparents joined us for our Annual Mass, morning tea and concert. Our celebration gave us the opportunity to recognise the important part our Grandparents play in our lives.

We acknowledged the presence of our grandparents, the joy they bring into our lives and the wisdom they share with us by placing two camping chairs beside our campfire. They represent for us the many times we have sat and listened as our grandparents shared their stories and wisdom with us. Thank you to Sami Carberry her grandparents Ann and Howard Gregson and Georgia Taylor and grandmother June Burke for bringing in our chairs.

We were fortunate to have Eileen Dick, grandmother of Patrick (College Captain 2019 and Jackson O’Brien College Captain 2017) present to share her reflections on being a grandmother. Eileen shared some of her life experiences explaining how important family was and to be always there for each other. After Mass, Eileen and Patrick were interviewed by Win News.

Bryana’s Reception into the Catholic Community

We welcomed Bryana and her parents Trudy and Mark McGowan as they gathered to celebrate the occasion of Bryana’s full reception into the Catholic community.

Bryana was asked if it was her wish baptised in the faith of the Church. To which she answered, ‘It is’. Bryana was anointed with Chrism as Fr Ray spoke these words to her.

You are anointed as priest to be a mediator between people.

You are anointed as prophet to be a person of hope.

You are anointed as king to treat every human being with the same dignity.

Bryana’s sponsors, Annabelle Lynch and Patrick O’Brien lit a candle from our College Candle which represented the life and faith of Bryana. It is entrusted to her to keep it burning brightly.

Bryana received her first communion and the College community raised their hands to bless her.

On behalf of the College community, we would like to thank Bryana for choosing to mark this important occasion with us. We feel honoured to be part of your faith journey and thank you for example you have shown to us. Mr Lynch presented Bryana with a gift on behalf of the College Community. May it always remind her of just how loved she is.

Year 9 Retreat

The Year 9 Retreat will be held next Thursday 8 August. Mr Michael Fitzpatrick will facilitate this retreat. Michael has had many years of experience in the field of youth ministry and retreats. The day will consist of a wide range of activities that will encourage students to think about and reflect on their lives. Students will have the opportunity for personal reflection, group work and prayer.

A letter will be sent home outlining expectations for this day.

By Monday 5^th August all students in Years 8, 9 and 10 will receive an individualised email outlining the steps to select subjects for 2020.

It is very important that students check their emails and show their parents these steps before attending the subject expo on Monday night.

All current Year 7 students will also be receiving an email next week to select one language for 2020 (either Japanese or French).  If students do not select by the due date, a language will be allocated to them.

This term our Year 11 students participated in an Equip Leadership incursion days run by Unleashing Personal Potential and the Hopefull Institute with the aim to empower students to thrive as they learn, live and lead.

The days involved high energy, high impact training, that called upon every student to contribute through their influence, strengths, teamwork and actions as they participated in the three sessions on the day: LEADERSHIP IS INFLUENCE- Everyday Leadership by example and action; THE EPIC RACE- active, small team race event (using our A.S.P.I.R.E. framework); and BATTLE OF THE HOUSES- action-packed challenge in house groups.

On the second day, students engaged with Glen Gerreyn, Director and Co-founder of the HopeFull Institute. Students took part in a powerful workshop call ‘Day of Hope’ which inspired students to shift negative thinking and inspired them to positively navigate their way through challenges that they will face in the modern world. When we have the opportunity to use our strengths (the things we are good at and enjoy doing), we are more likely to feel confident, creative, satisfied and engaged (McQuaid & Lawn 2014). Strengths are ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that come naturally and easily to us and enable high functioning and performance (Linley & Harrington 2004). When we work in our strengths – in our activities, relationships and learning – they energise us. We all have positive character traits to be discovered, valued, used and further developed.

At St Joseph’s College, our You’ll Never Walk Alone framework is based on a strengths-based approach. It is not just about finding what our character strengths are. We continue to work with our students to focus on what’s going right for them, rather than what’s going wrong. When students are encouraged to bring their strengths and skills to positively contribute to their classroom, learning becomes an enriching experience.

SPECIAL REPORT : E-cigarettes and Vaping

E-cigarettes and vaping are quickly gaining in popularity, especially amongst teenagers. Manufacturers of these products are deploying sophisticated marketing campaigns in an attempt to glamorise and promote smoking to young people.

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the vapour produced by the heated nicotine liquid of an e-cigarette or vape pen. Many teens believe that vaping is less harmful than smoking as it is often formulated with flavourings to appeal to younger users. Be aware that e-cigarettes stating 0 mg of nicotine, may still contain nicotine. It is a highly addictive substance that can slow the brain development in kids affecting their memory, concentration, learning and mood. Because vaping is new, the short and long-term health effects remain unknown.
However, studies have shown that kids who have tried vaping, are more likely to smoke tobacco products later in life than kids who have not tried vaping. As e-cigarettes leave little odour, they are particularly easy to conceal and use discreetly in public places, even in schools.

In this Special Report, parents and care givers will be provided with the facts relating to e-cigarettes and vaping, whilst also highlighting the potential dangers and surrounding legislation. National Science Week is set to occur on the 10^th to the 18^th of August this year. This annual celebration of Science and Technology has the theme “Destination Moon: more missions, more science” and aims to inspire students about space science, just as the Apollo 11 Moon landing inspired the world 50 years ago, on January 20, 1969.  This year at St Joseph’s College we will be conducting 4 STEM-based competitions which promises to challenge the researchers, engineers, inventors and creative thinkers in us all.  Get your teams together to build a bridge out of spaghetti that is strong enough to carry our “Lego Moon Rover” across a crater?  Design a parachute out of materials provided to carry our “astronaut” egg to safety.  Create and decorate a “Lunar Vehicle” that will send an astronaut down a ramp at speed without breaking.  And lastly our Moon Slime competition will challenge those with a creative streak with prizes awarded for the brightest slime, coolest texture, most unique and grossest slime.  Competitions will be held at Lunch from the 12^th to the 16^th in Rooms 55 and 56 of the Waterford building.  Please email Deb (dwhipps@sjc.qld.edu.au) to register your interest or fill in the name of your group on the sign-up sheet at student entrance.

So why study Science?

Beyond the significant scientific breakthroughs, there are individual benefits to learning Science, such as developing the ability to ask questions, collect information, organize and test ideas, solve problems, and apply what we learn.

Science is everywhere; riding to school on a bus, in that instance alone, there are many examples of technology based on the scientific method. The school bus is a product of many areas of science and technology, including mechanical engineering and innovation. The systems of roads, lights, sidewalks and other infrastructure are carefully designed by civil engineers and city planners. The smartphone in a student’s hand is a miracle of modern computer engineering.

Outside the window, trees turn sunlight into stored energy and create the oxygen we need to survive. Whether “natural” or human-derived, every aspect of a student’s life is filled with science — from their own internal biology to the smart TV in the living room.

Although inquiry and the scientific method are integral to science and practice, every decision a student makes is based on these processes. Problem-solving and critical thinking are two of the most important skills students learn in school. They are essential to making good decisions that lead to achievement and success during and after school.

The process students learn when creating, executing, evaluating and communicating the results of an experiment can be applied to any challenge they face in school, from proving a point in a persuasive essay to developing a photo in the darkroom.

Scientific inquiry and scientific method form the basis of studies this term. Each Junior class will conduct Student Experiments requiring the modification of methodology and the improvement of the accuracy of the data collection.  Problem-solving and critical thinking will be at the core of these tasks.

So, Mums and Dads, Grandmas and Grandads of Year 7 students be prepared for the Ballista challenge. Each Year 7 student will receive a small package of equipment and instructions to build a small ballista which will then be used to conducted various experiments this term.

Year 8 will look at energy efficiency in balls and Year 9 will be designing wind turbines to maximise energy output. Don’t worry they will do this at school so no projects for you at home. Year 10 are investigating clock reactions.

Lastly a reminder that Tutorials are offered every Tuesday after school in the library. All year levels are welcome.

Liturgy of Word with Holy Communion:

This Sunday’s Gospel Reading – Luke 12:13-21

Summary: Jesus is asked to make judgement in a family dispute about the sharing of an inheritance. Jesus responds with a parable about a man who has so much abundance from his farming, that he decides to pull down his barns and build bigger ones, only to die that night and end with nothing. Jesus warns about the storage of material wealth, rather than making oneself “rich in the sight of God’.

The world behind the text: Inheritance laws would have been expected to be regulated during this period, so a brother wanting a share of a family inheritance would have been expected and accepted. Material possessions were important in this era where few had much material wealth.

The world of the text:

• Jesus often used parables to teach. (Parables challenge beliefs and provide new ways of thinking. A parable is a story that contains content in beginning and middle that listeners would expect. They would be comfortable with this. However, the ending is unexpected and challenges the beliefs and understandings of the listeners and is, therefore, not expected or comfortable.)
• It would be expected that people try to gain material wealth, particularly due to the harsh laws of Rome. Storing riches would be expected and acceptable. However, Jesus challenges these realities, by saying that such riches don’t help a person when they are dead. Rather, it is better, while alive, to do things which are more important than just gaining material wealth; that are important in God’s eyes.

The world in front of the text: All of us are constantly being encouraged by advertising, and often by society, to want more and to have more; that we should never be content with what we have, or be aware of what consequences there may be to others for our possessing things. This Gospel reading encourages us to consider what is really important, that is, what is important in building God’s Kingdom. Our sights should be set on doing God’s work, especially through our interactions and considerations of our family and neighbours in all we do.

During You’ll Never Walk Alone, a group of 14 students from grades 10 to 12 chose to assist Mr Ramage and Mr Hodges, to create a piece of furniture from old used pallets.

A design of an outdoor table and 4 stools was chosen for the project, the pallets were disassembled and the pieces were dressed to remove the rough edges and cut to size.

The students assembled the stools and assisted in the tailing out from the machines when thicknessing and cutting to size, they also sanded and varnished the stools.

The table was assembled by the students and finished off by Mr Ramage, Mrs Hensler and Mr Hodges.

The auction evening was a great success with a total of $13000 raised from the sale of the pallet furniture, the students outdoor table sold for $575 which was very exciting.

The event was organised by the Toowoomba Orthodontist Pop Up Pallets, with a a record $14,860.65 raised going to MMM Give Me 5 For Kids Appeal to help sick children in the Toowoomba hospital. There were many great items for auction and our table managed to come in the top 5. Sponsored by Toowoomba Orthodontists, Focus HR, Haslam Consulting & Accounting, New Hope Group and Bishopp.

The options program was a great success giving these students some valuable skills, and who have contributed their time to a valuable community project.

On the 26^th July 2019, the Year 11 Tourism Class traveled to Movie World on the Gold Coast.

After arriving, we went to a seminar room and participated in a talk regarding sustainable tourism and various information about theme parks operated by Village Roadshow Theme Parks. We were informed of the sustainable practices Movie World has implemented, such as recycling and using eco-friendly products which help to ensure they are caring for the environment, the economy and socio-cultural aspects of local communities.

Once the talk concluded, the students were allowed to walk around the theme park, looking at its many facilities and enjoying the various rides. Overall, we were very lucky to have been provided with this opportunity of going to Movie World, which will help provide us with information for our investigation assignment.

Students get lost in research.

On Friday the Year 12 Legal Studies students travelled  to the Queensland Supreme Court Library in Brisbane to conduct research for their Independent Research Assessment Task.

On the day they attended a legal research skills workshop run by the Supreme Court Library staff and then had the opportunity to complete hands-on legal research on the legal topic they selected for their research assignment. Students have chosen a broad range of current legal issues to research like the recognition of Indigenous Australians in the Constitution, defamation in the online environment, the regulation of heavy vehicle fatigue management and the treatment of juveniles within the criminal justice system.

Students had a successful experience and came away with a broad range of primary and secondary sources that they would not ordinarily have access to and utilised the expertise of the library staff to help them with their research. They are now in a position to push forward with finalising their assignment. Thank you to Jackson O’Brien for driving the bus and Maree Nunn for accompanying the students on the excursion.

Last Friday and Saturday nights, 14 of our students took part in the Toowoomba District Secondary Teams Chess Championship, held in the Toowoomba Grammar School Junior Assembly Hall. These 14 students made up four of the 19 teams at the competition. All our teams were in the Junior Division.

Each of our four teams had mixed results. These ranged from winning three of the four tables in a round, through to only one of the tables. Much was learned over the total of six rounds contested, and the students enjoyed themselves!

Having four Junior teams in the Championship this year bodes well for the future of chess playing at St Joseph’s College!

Wednesday 7^th August ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

The final day of our Athletics Carnival will take place next Wednesday at O’Quinn Street.  If time permits, we will have the presentation of age champions and overall house champions for the day.

Again, students will need to be dropped off at O’Quinn Street for roll marking between 8.30 and 8.45am. They can be dropped off earlier as staff members will be present from 7.00am onwards. There will be buses provided for students from out of town services and those requiring a lift to the oval. Students are again asked to write their names down on a list at the student entrance.

Last week we had many students presenting to the first aid tent with dehydration. This can be easily prevented by commencing hydration at least three to four days before the carnival and constantly drinking water throughout the day rather than coke or energy drinks.

Parents/Guardians we also need information regarding non-participation of students at the carnival. Please supply the students with a note or let Lee Long know if participation is not allowed. This covers both the student and the College.

Sunshine Coast Touch Tournament

The Open Boys arrived at the College at 5.00am on Sunday morning to travel to the Sunshine Coast for a touch tournament as part of their preparation for the All Schools Touch Tournament in Brisbane. Mr McKenzie  volunteered to come along as the coach for the boys.

Our first game was at 8.00am against Glasshouse Catholic College. We won this very convincingly even after the early start and bus trip.

St Joseph’s was successful in winning against Noosa and Mueller College, this game counting for one of our rounds at All Schools.

St Joseph’s then played the other undefeated team; Chancellor College. This was a great game.  We thought we had a 2 all draw but they managed to score with a diving player just as the hooter went and so the score line read 2 -3 to Chancellor. Knowing this team is coached by the current Australian Open Men’s coach, we certainly gave them a run for their money.

This placed us second in our pool and with the cross over we played the top position in the other pool for a right to play in the grand final. Our opposition was Sunshine Coast College.

The boys played really well with strong attack and awesome defence. And so, into the grand final we were. An early start, a long day with only 10 players and a 5.30pm grand final, the day was starting to tell on the boys. Legs were getting heavy, muscles were starting to burn, some cramping was starting to affect some of the boys and a few small injuries were all tell tale signs we were in for a hard game.

But not at any stage did they give up. They fought right to the final hooter going down 3 tries to 1. A commendable effort and a tremendous fighting spirit displayed by each member of the team.

The boys and I would like to make a very special mention and thank you to Mr Matt Prendergast who supported the College by referring our games for us. He was only supposed to do 2 games but ended up completing 4. We are very grateful for his support. We are also very grateful to the support of parents who traveled up to watch and support the boys as they played.

To Mr McKenzie, a very special thank you for coaching the boys and supporting them in this carnival. For the boys and Mr McKenzie to give up a Sunday to participate in the carnival, it truly shows their dedication to the sport and the College.

World Education Program (WEP) Australia – Student Exchange Program

WEP is a not-for-profit student exchange organisation, registered with the education departments/regulatory authorities. WEP has recently been awarded the title of Leading Provider of Student Exchange Programs 2019 by the Australian Enterprise Awards.

Students who experience difficult circumstances or setbacks during their schooling can now apply for UQ’s Leadership, Excellence and Diversity (LEAD) Scholarship. Previously, this scholarship has only been available to those students enrolled in an Australian State High School. This year, we are pleased to extend this opportunity to students from all schools across Australia.

Each LEAD Scholarship offers financial assistance of $8000 per year for up to five years, a dedicated academic mentor, a support network through non-residential membership of a UQ college and priority access to valuable internship and career planning assistance.

CELEBRATE CHILDREN’S BOOK COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA BOOK WEEK

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) was founded at a time when Australian children’s books were few, and Australian authors and illustrators were virtually unknown. In 1946 the CBCA established annual book awards to promote children’s books of outstanding literary and artistic quality. These awards are now the most influential and highly respected in Australia.

Throughout the year, the CBCA works in partnership with authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers and other organisations in the children’s book world to bring images and stories into the hearts and minds of children and adults. Each year across Australia, the CBCA brings children and books together by announcing the CBCA Book of the Year Awards on the third Friday in August and celebrating Book Week commencing the following day. From 17-23 August 2019 we celebrate CBCA Book Week and St Joseph’s College library plans to host some appealing activities.

2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning.

For students in Years 7 — 9 to successfully complete the challenge they must read 15 books based upon their year level during the reading period. If a student is unsure of what to read, please seek advice from the library staff or English teachers. When a book has been read please make sure students inform their English teacher so their online reading record can be updated. The reading period closes on 23 August. Remember even if students have read their required number of books, they can keep going and read as many books as they can. We’re trying to break the 2018 record of 2.46 million books.

Parents and care givers play an important role in encouraging students to develop a love of reading. Here are some ideas to help:
