College Sport
Small College - Encouraging Physical Excellence
St Joseph's College participates in the Wednesday Afternoon inter-school sporting competition.
The summer and winter competitions run for eight weeks each with teams playing for premiership honours.
Training for swimming, cross country and athletics occurs each day in their respective seasons.
Students are able to compete for selection in various sports to make Darling Downs teams, and subsequently
Queensland selection. Unfortunately students can only be recognised through school sport for our Wall of Honour.
Sport is not for everyone but students are encouraged to participate each week to the best of their ability. Students are bussed to the various
locations and bussed back to the College to return home via their normal route. They may leave the venue but must have a note from parents enabling them to do so.
During 2006 our College had 6 students selected as Queensland Representatives and some 30 students who were selected as part of Darling Downs teams.
We won 13 premierships and competed in almost every sports competition that was available. We may only be a smal school but we do have a big heart.
Term 1
In the summer competition, the girls may select from basketball, football (soccer), hockey, softball, indoor cricket and waterpolo.
The boys may select from volleyball, tennis, squash, touch, nine a side Aussie rules, cricket and waterpolo. The girls compete in
year levels while the boys compete in age divisions.
Students are able to compete for selection in various Darling Downs teams from any of the above sports in Under 15 and Open age divisions.
They must attend a Toowoomba selection afternoon and once selected at this level compete at the Darling Downs selection day.
The College holds its annual swimming carnival at Toowoomba's Milne Bay Pool. The students swim according to their
ages for age champion. From this event the students are selected to represent the College at the inter-school swimming carnival. Students can also
nominate to trial for Darling Downs selection.
The last week of term the College cross country is held at Kearneys Springs where students compete for age champion, with all points being tallied to determine the house championship.
Each Friday night is the Friday Night Basketball Competition run for students in Year 8, Under 15, and Open age group divisions for both boys and girls.
Swimming training is held each morning for students who wish to learn how to swim and also for students who do not swim on a regular basis but would like to improve their chances in the pool.
Cross country training commences in the afternoons immediately after the swimming carnival is held.
Term 2
The winter inter-school sport competition gets under way. The girls select from netball, indoor cricket, tennis, touch, volleyball and squash.
The boys select from baseball, basketball, hockey, football (soccer), and rugby league. If students do not make the various inter-school teams,
they join a social sport activity each week.
Students nominate to compete at the Darling Downs Cross Country event to be held at Kearney springs. Cross country training continues of an afternoon.
Term 3
During the holidays the Confraternity Rugby League and the Queensland Independent Netball teams spend the first week of the June/July holidays competing in their respective competitions.
Athletics training of an afternoon commences. Students compete each Wednesday afternoon and during lunch hours for events in the athletics carnival. Students are selected from our carnvial to compete at the inter-school
carnival held later in the term at Harristown. Students are also able to nominate for Darling Downs selection trials.
The Bill Turner Cup is a football (soccer) competition run after school for Under 15 boys and girls. An SSI Cup competition is run for the older age groups. The AFL Independent Cup, Rugby Union, and Junior and Senior Vikki Wilson
Competitions are also held during this term. These are all after school competitions.
Term 4
The first Wednesday afternoon back is the Sports Award Presentation afternoon where students who have won premierships, age champions or have been selected in Darling Downs or Queensland teams are rewarded for their efforts.
This event is held during sport time.
The students compete in an inter-house mixed competition in junior and senior age groups in five sports - netball, football (soccer), volleyball, basketball and touch. At the conclusion of this competition students commence
trials and training for the following year of Wednesday afternoon inter-school competition.
